WALKERS RAISED $82M LAST YEAR NATIONWIDE TO BATTLE BREAST CANCER; ABOUT 2,500 PEOPLE TAKING PART LOCALLY
Even amid a sea of pink, zany outfits, the hats worn by Wild Women Walking for a Cure stood out. A crazy collection of pipe cleaners, pins, Styrofoam balls and ribbons decorated the pink baseball caps, worn by the group to celebrate the start of the Susan G. Komen San Diego 3-Day, which took off Friday from the Del Mar Fairgrounds.
Organizers estimated about 2,500 people are participating in this year’s event, held to raise funds and awareness for the fight against breast cancer.
The Wild Women have been attending popular Komen-sponsored walks since 1998.
On Friday, the team had 21 women — some from as far away as Massachusetts — ready to begin the 60-mile, San Diego-based trek. The group raised almost $63,000 for the cause.
“It is such an awesome world of kindness that gets created on this journey,” said Peggy Paul of Redondo Beach, who has walked in 20 of the 3-Day events. “There is still more work to be done for the cause. Until my daughter and my grandchildren don’t have to worry about this disease, we gotta keep walking.”
Walkers travel 20 miles each day and, in San Diego, pass through familiar landmarks like the Torrey Pines State Park, Sea World and the San Diego Zoo. The walk will conclude at Petco Park.
At the end of their daily journey, walkers settle into a camp sprinkled with pink tents where they can grab a meal, a hot shower and enjoy provided entertainment.
To participate, each walker must raise $2,300. Last year, 14 collective 3-Day events across the nation raised more than $82 million.
Near 7 a.m. Friday, the Del Mar Fairground loudspeakers came to life. “The moment you’ve been preparing for is about to arrive,” a voice called out. “Your three-day journey is about to begin.”
More than 4,000 participants moved for the starting line. Dogs were decked out in rosy capes, women wore hot pink feather headdresses and the only thing that outnumbered magenta tutus were men in bras.
Jen Grove, the executive director of the Del Mar Village Association, has been working for weeks with a group of volunteers to get the city’s official cheering station, hosted by En Fuego Cantina and Grill, ready for the walk.
On Friday, Camino Del Mar, the city’s main drag, was covered in signs, pink balloons and streamers. Volunteers, sometimes called “walker stalkers,” were ready to pass out water bottles and carried inflatable noisemakers called Thunderstix.
Del Mar has long been a thoroughfare for the San Diego 3-Day. Five years ago, about a dozen volunteers decided to start showing their support for the Komen walkers by gathering on downtown sidewalks to cheer. The city became an official cheering spot two years later.
About 60 volunteers were there Friday to show support, including Torrey Pines High School cheerleaders, local firefighters and life guards.
Jim Coleman is a 29-year Del Mar resident, and was one of the first volunteers to get involved in Del Mar’s cheering efforts. His hair had been dyed a light pink for the occasion, his shirt reading “Save the Tatas.”
His mother battled breast cancer, so the issue is close to his heart.
“I was so blown away by the commitment of these walkers and their passion,” he said. “It’s probably the best three-hour period I get to spend every year.”
